Ward 17 residents have formally petitioned the City of Harare, requesting urgent intervention to address escalating noise pollution in their community.
The petition, spearheaded by local representatives Carole Pearce, Helen Mitchell, and John Vekris, highlights the disruptive impact of several establishments, particularly the Afro 161 restaurant on Sam Nujoma Avenue.
The petition, delivered to the Mayor, Councillor Jacob Mafume, on May 16, 2025, outlines the residents’ grievances regarding excessive noise from various venues, including Belgravia Sports Club, Angie’s Bar, and the notorious Afro 161.
“For years, we have endured sleepless nights due to the relentless noise from these establishments. It’s not just an inconvenience; it’s affecting our families, our elderly, and our students.”
The residents are particularly concerned about Afro 161, which they claim has been a significant source of disturbance since relocating to Avondale three years ago.
“They advertise closing at 2 am, but often continue until 3 am or later. This blatant disregard for noise regulations is ruining our neighborhood.”
The petition calls for a meeting with key stakeholders, including representatives from the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the Liquor Licensing Board, and the Ministry of Local Government, to discuss actionable measures to restore peace.
“We believe that dialogue is essential. We need to clarify what each establishment’s operating permits allow and agree on noise levels that respect the rights of residents.”
The residents have gathered over 105 signatures in support of their cause, although some were not submitted in time for the petition.
In addition to seeking a meeting, the petition explicitly requests the closure of Afro 161, citing its open-air performances and loud music as detrimental to the quality of life in the area.
