The City of Harare is set to benefit from a major financial boost after the Swiss government, through its Embassy in Zimbabwe, pledged US$1.4 million to support the development and improvement of health services in the capital.
During a courtesy call on Wednesday, Stefano Berti, Head of Cooperation at the Embassy of Switzerland in Harare, met with the Harare Mayor, Councillor Jacob Mafume, at Town House to announce the pledge. The funding is expected to strengthen the city’s health infrastructure and expand access to quality care for Harare’s growing population.
“Switzerland is committed to supporting Harare in its efforts to deliver better health services to its residents,” Berti said.
“We believe this partnership will make a tangible difference in people’s lives, especially among the most vulnerable.”
Mayor Mafume welcomed the Swiss commitment, describing it as a timely intervention that will accelerate the city’s ongoing health sector reforms.
“This generous pledge from the Swiss government will go a long way in improving the state of health services in Harare,” Mafume stated. “Our vision is to ensure that all residents, regardless of background, have access to quality and affordable healthcare.”
The $1.4 million package is expected to be channeled towards upgrading medical facilities, procuring essential medicines, and supporting innovative community-based health programmes such as the City of Harare’s Community Health Equity Fund (CHEF). The CHEF initiative, currently being piloted in Mbare and Hopley, aims to provide affordable health coverage for low-income families and informal sector workers.
City Health Director Dr. Prosper Chonzi emphasized the significance of the Swiss support, urging residents to participate in the CHEF programme.
“Community involvement is crucial for the success of our health programmes,” Dr. Chonzi said. “The additional resources will allow us to broaden our reach and improve service delivery across the city.”
The Swiss pledge comes at a critical time, as Harare strives to address persistent challenges in its public health sector, including resource shortages and access disparities exacerbated by economic pressures.
Details on the disbursement and specific allocation of the funds are expected to be announced following further discussions between the Embassy of Switzerland and the City of Harare.
